Packaging is one of the most complex fields of design — as behind the bright wrapping, a huge psychological aspect is hidden.

If you ask me what aspects of life fill me with most of inspiration, it will be music, stationery, and product packaging. In every beautiful piece, I feel a long creative process and meticulous psychological research to catch the customer’s mood, intent, and interest — and that fascinated me more and more.

A few years ago, I started exploring how differently countries and studios approach packaging design. Japanese package was the first field I delved into, and since then every time I do shopping, travel or even go down a rabbit hole.

What was the goal of the creators? Was it to play on the customer’s emotion, make them more tangible and valuable? Was it to show the product and help every person establish contact with it? Was it simply a wish to show the mastership or an ingenious idea, that would define the product and create an image for years? Every time I run into a stylish pack of biscuits, I’m all about these questions.

I believe that asking ourselves these questions and seeking to answer them develops a deeper understanding of creative thought and upgrades the skills. No, it’s not about copying another artist’s style. It’s about getting what really matters and what’s essential for you as a creator, because packaging design is multi-dimensional, and there is no style to fit all. And will never be.

Packaging design can balance between purely commercial and social incentives. It may grow around the principles of minimalism, be entirely pragmatic or kitschy — and in any of the cases, it has good reasons for it.

Therefore I’ve built up this selection to help you better understand yourself, find something special in other designers’ work (most of the projects are realized ones, not just concepts). Or at least, it can be a source to draw packaging design inspiration from.

Caparaki

A limited edition raki, an alcoholic beverage from Caparo creative agency, which they shared with their clients and friends as a New Year gift. The packaging box features humorous and sarcastic inside stories, jokes, and projects from Caparo from the previous year. Cartoon portraits of each Caparo member are part of the illustration.

Nearly every cosmetic brand has a collection with a similar style of packaging. And that makes sense: as opposed to minimalist design, abstraction combined with juice color palettes sounds fresh and new.

Fini Confetti Package Design

The way artisan bakeries and shops pack their sweets can be very inspiring, and the very macaroon boxes for a Serbian confectionery are an excellent example. The colors of the box are natural terracotta, yellow and pink nuances — while the rhymes printed on the box top evoke the first contact between the lips and the dessert.

Everyone knows how much I’m in love with Nosigner’s work, and to me, these Kyoto pickles bottles are probably their most remarkable packaging project. To create a new image as a brand of healthy fermented foods, they designed the package to emphasize a sense of both Japanese and Western eclecticism.

Qobra Coffee

Since all creatives are coffee addicts, their attitude to coffee packaging is very intimate. Qobra Coffee perfectly reflects this attitude and presents a package that every designer would be happy to see on their shelves in the kitchen, so good it is.

Mosi Mooncake

Mosi mooncake is an inclusive packaging design project that collaborates with a Hong Kong-based social enterprise called mosi mosi. It is an inclusive design studio aiming to help people with disabilities to have a better living. Illustrations for the mooncake boxes were illustrated by autism artists, who made up 4 unique patterns.

Sophia’s Tea

I simply love this sort of style and can understand creators who resort to it. The formula is simple: beautiful patterns, fresh colors, retro design for labels, and reserved yet classy fonts. Whatever it’s used for, cosmetics, or team packaging, you’re gonna fall for it at first sight.

There are products that are packed so beautifully that you’d buy them with no hesitation. To me, Atolye is right one of them. Clean, geometrical, refreshing — it feels like your whole lifestyle is gonna change as you get one of those candles.

Girls Organic Lab

Sweety & Co. have created a strong and memorable identity for Girls Organic Lab. It uses the feminine form represented by Mami Wata as a highlight. The color palette brings warm tones to contrast the rosé, representing the modern woman. However, I have mixed feeling about the color palette: it both attracts and frightens me. Don’t ask why.

Molocow – Milk Package Concept

As the creators state, this package of milk is so spacial that it looks like out of this world. Well, exactly, and it’s the best about this concept (no, unfortunately, you can’t buy it anywhere yet). So I just hope to see it once in a supermarket, a lactose-free edition.

Design for Persephone bakery is so beautiful that all I want is to relocate to Jackson, WY and start every day with their coffee and cakes. A combination of pastel colors, retro illustrations, and classy display font for a logo is absolutely winning. Just look at all these peculiar details!

LANEIGE Cream Skin 1st Anniversary Kit

HEAZ designed a promotion kit to celebrate Cream Skin’s first birthday. The milk carton concept was derived from the characteristics of the white milk formula. In addition, the package, based on the form of Matryoshka (Russian doll), offers the fun of unboxing each of the five different products. And finally, it’s the cutest cuteness you’ll ever see as packaging!

Sweet Virtues Packaging

Sweet Virtues present another popular design pattern for product packaging: trendy floral motives as a background and a perfect combination of fonts. It’s made both modern, funky, and retro, so I assume that the target audience for such packaging is very diversified.

Wölffer Cider Cans

I couldn’t choose between Wölffer Cider Cans and Sweet Virtues from the previous showcase, so enjoy both! If Sweet Virtues come with quite typical for confectionery design, Wölffer strikes with a daring retro twist with a pinch of feminist mood.

ALO

Kind has developed a name and identity for Alo — an innovative, modern newcomer in traditional seafood. The name Alo is inspired by the old Norwegian expression ‘alo’, which refers to the noise made by seagulls and people out on the fishing grounds. And the packaging reminds of the rebellion sea, which can both cherish and kill.

Luc & Louna Branding and Packaging

Branding and packaging created for a conceptual luxury chocolate brand Luc & Louna. A selection of chocolate bars was developed and designed to showcase the different flavors, each with a minimal approach leaving the chocolate in the spotlight. Such a shame there is no milk chocolate in this series.

Vosges Haut Chocolat

Okay, here goes milk chocolate! There are three types of patters for these truffle and candy boxed. The patterns are made with only one single shape, which is also a part of the logotype — a loose interpretation of the Fleur-de-Lis.

Henua Organics

I know you were asking about classic minimalism — so here is something precious! ‘Henua’ is a Finnish word, meaning the exclusive feeling of being in total harmony with yourself and the surrounding world, and packaging perfectly supports the idea. Minimalist black and white aesthetics combined with frosted glass bottles, wooden caps and matt finish labels aim for a sophisticated premium feel.

Workaholic

A real workaholic is the one who can’t ever stop. That’s why The Clients Agency created 10 logos instead of one, 10 label designs instead of one, and also a gift box, beer cans, coffee bean bags, coasters, pins, stickers, wrapping paper, flask, badges, posters, and even Telegram stickerpack.
